This past weekend we took a day trip to Kamakura, the city about an hour outside of Tokyo that’s probably most famous for its 13-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue, the second largest in Japan. I had managed to eat a few bites at home before we left, but my boyfriend was running on a completely empty stomach when we arrived, so we picked a place to stop for food without taking vegetarian-friendliness into account. In compromise, Japanese, lunch, restaurants, what to avoid on January 27, 2010 at 2:44 pmOn the way to the Tokyo National Museum yesterday, we stopped to eat near Ueno Station. Just a door or two to the right of the restaurant with this hard-to-miss display was a shop with omu-raisu, or what looked to be a plain omelette draped over rice, displayed in the window. Not much to that, but our meal was going to be both breakfast and lunch, so it wasn’t too big of a deal. I ended up finding something besides the omelette that I could order, and a good thing too — I learned later that the “raisu” in omu-raisu is chicken rice. So I was even more glad that there had been something else I could eat.
